Trauma and EMDR Therapy in Sioux Falls

Find relief and reconnect with yourself.

You feel lost and don’t know how to put the pieces back together.

Trauma can leave us feeling confused, overwhelmed, and scared. Maybe you don’t feel like yourself anymore or are struggling to get through each day. Do nightmares and memories continue to follow you around, day and night? Perhaps you’re tired of feeling on edge all the time and just wish you could relax again. Maybe you are struggling to get through the work day and having difficulties focusing and staying on task lately.

Traumatic experiences are unfortunately a part life for each of us, but trauma shouldn’t linger and continue to haunt us or follow us around. Maybe you were recently in a car crash or some kind of accident. Or maybe you experienced abuse or neglect growing up. Are you struggling with a recent loss and are having difficulties coping? Or perhaps you don’t know if what you experienced is considered traumatic but it continues to bother you.

You’re tired of feeling anxious and alone:

  • You may be struggling day to day and wonder if you will ever feel like yourself again.

  • You may have noticed changes in your relationships. You feel more alone and misunderstood.

  • Perhaps your constantly feeling anxious and nothing you do seems to fully take the edge off.

Common questions about EMDR/trauma therapy.

  • EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and uses somatic tools, such as eye movements or tapping, to help an individual heal during the therapeutic process. EMDR therapy is an evidence based treatment and was discovered in 1987 by Dr. Francine Schapiro. EMDR therapy is a recommended treatment for trauma, PTSD, and distressing experiences by several world organizations including the World Health Organization. EMDR can also be helpful for clients with anxiety, depression, grief/loss, chronic pain, distressing life events and more.

  • During EMDR therapy, bilateral stimulation is used to help folks process upsetting memories. Bilateral stimuation may include tactile pulsers buzzing when held in the client’s hands, alternating hand taps on the right and left side of the body, and alternating audible sounds in each ear, or client’s eyes following a light bar back and forth. We know it sounds weird, and it may seem weird in session at first. But it gets less weird over time and can actually be pretty soothing. During EMDR therapy you may experience a variety of memories, thoughts, physical sensations, and feelings. This can include feeling tired, energized, calm, and sleepy. Throughout EMDR I will be with you each step of the way, supporting and guiding you through the process. EMDR can be a nice alternative to talk therapy as it requires less talking.

  • No problem, I will never pressure you to start EMDR before your ready. There are lots of tools we can work on and build in therapy to help you feel better without EMDR. EMDR isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok. I am trained in several other trauma informed therapy techniques, so we can find the right tools for you.
